I too was reading it and thinking to myself 'just because your grandfather was a slave doesn't make you any more aware of what it felt like to be one'. I can understand why she included it, but I felt that it rang very false. Almost as though she were trying to justify herself and make a novel that was clearly fiction appear to be more true.
